RSVP & Start Time for November MPG: Instead of sending massive amounts of emails, we'll go back to posting in the comments section below regarding RSVP for the next month's MPG. A suggestion came up recently that we bump the start time up to 4pm. In theory, this should mean that the games would be started at about 4:30-4:45pm instead of roughly one hour later. Is this something we can just agree to now?

As far as I know:
In - Scott, Marc, John, Chris H., Bugs, Sean, Dave, Curley, Kevin, Johnny, Chris F.

Bugs Wins Main Event

August 2009 - The Main Event

Bugs caps off a madcap run up to the Main Event by actually taking it down. He had five victories from March to August, which is especially significant considering that July's games counted towards the 2009-2010 season, which means that he took down an event in each of the final five months to end the 2008-2009 season. His haul included $100 for the victory and an additional $50 for 3rd place in the Player of the Year race. Bugs finished the year with six victories, eight cashes, and over $360 in total earnings.

It was only fitting that Bugs had to take down the current Main Even champ, Scott, in heads-up play. Scott took down $60 for his performance, though he was obviously more concerned with earning respect. Scott finished the year with three cashes and nearly $100 in total winnings.

The other big winner on the night was Curley, who took down the Player of the Year award for the 2008-2009 season. He tied Bugs with six victories across the span of the season, eleven cashes, and over $575 in total earnings for his first season in the MPG.

These guys? They just played a micro-limit cash game after they busted. No big whoop.

The results of the Main Event:
1st - Bugs ($100)
2nd - Scott ($60)
3rd - John ($40)
4th - Sean
5th - Curley
6th - Zach

Issue: Games Running Too Long
I am fully aware that the games are running too long. I've got some ideas on how to fix it, especially with the limit games. Tweaked blind structures should help, meaning essentially we start about two levels into the games. Another thing that would help is having fewer chips to start. So why don't we go back to 1,000 starting chips for limit games only? We did it at the beginning of the year, and it seemed to work out okay. Somewhere along the way, though, we switched back to 1,500 and things have slowed down.

So, instead of starting limit games at 10/20, I propose we start them at 30/60 with 1,000 chips instead of 1,500 and then move through the stucture accordingly:

30/60 (20 mins)
50/100 (40 mins)
75/150 (1 hr)
100/200 (1 hr 20 mins)
150/300 (1 hr 40 mins)
200/400 (2 hrs)
300/600 (2 hrs 20 mins)
400/800 (2 hrs 40 mins)
500/1000 (3 hrs)

If you notice, the game theorhetically shouldn't go much past three hours, epsecially if we don't have to split pots like we did with stud hi/lo. If, though, we are playing a split pot game, I propose that the structure continues on until a winner is crowned.

The hold 'em games, too, need some adjustment. I propose we start one level in, at 10/20, and we switch from 20 minute blinds to 15 minute blinds once we get about half of the table out. The rule of thumb, I think, should be once it gets down to four-handed. Here is the blind structure we use for hold 'em:

10/20 (20 mins)
15/30 (40 mins)
25/50 (60 mins)
40/80 (1 hr 20 mins)
50/100 (1 hr 40 mins)
75/150 (2 hrs)
100/200 (2 hrs 20 mins)
150/300 (2 hrs 35 mins)
200/400 (2 hrs 50 mins)
300/600 (3 hrs 5 mins)

It would be an all-in fest by the 200/400 level, so I can't see much of a reason to go past 300/600, but we can talk about it. And again, as with the limit games, this would go at somewhere around 3 hours assuming that we switched the 20 minute levels to 15 minutes at somewhere around 100/200 or 150/300.

What do you think?

Chat it up in the comments box below.

New Rules: As usual, we will be switching up some things for this year's tournaments. Below are a list of the new rules that we will be playing by:

1. 4pm Start Times: Because of some of our unusually long games, we are going to be playing almost all games (minus the Main Event for sure) at 4pm, unless otherwise noted.

2. Starting Stacks: 1,500 for No Limit tourneys. 1,000 for Limit tourneys. The same blind structures as last year will be used.

3. Total Points for Player of the Year Race: We will be switching back to a total points system for the Player of the Year race. It will start at 1pt for last place, regardless of how many people are in any given game, and increase 1pt for each eliminated player until we reach the money. At that point, the points will jump significantly, depending on the number of players, to reward both cashing in and especially winning a tournament.

4. Dues Cut in Half: from $60 last year to $30 this year. $2.50/month. Dues can be paid once every two months, or all at once, depending on your preference. All games will still be $5 with the exception of the $25 Main Event, the $10 H.O.R.S.E. tourney, and the $10 heads-up tournament.

5. All Dues Go Towards Player of the Year: The Main Event pot will not be increased with any dues. Also, it is likely that only two players will be paid out for the P.O.Y. award.

6. Tournament Schedule: Look to the sidebar for this year's tournament schedule. Some games have been eliminated. Some have been added. Others have been extended.

Good luck to all this year. If we don't see you in August, we will see you soon.

March MPG RSVP

Congratulations to Annie on being voted the February MPG. She took down the No Limit Five Card Draw event, which is her 2nd title this year. The feat is even more impressive considering that she is only normally able to play in the occasional second game of the evening. She took home $30 for her victory. Congrats.

Belated congratulations are also in order for Zach, Ryan, Rainer, and their newest family member, Finn. Finn was born happy, healthy, and very, very quickly. I'm sure I speak for everyone when I say we're all excited to meet her. Congrats.

Switching Games: There has been some talk lately about not necessarily playing the Hold 'Em game first all of the time. I propose that we switch the games this month and open up with the H.O.R.S.E. tourney first. If anyone objects, just leave a comment below. Otherwise, be advised that we'll be playing H.O.R.S.E. first and Hold 'Em second.

Tourney Structures: Our blind/ante structures are in desperate need of some changes. I am proposing the new blind structures below. The No Limit structure will apply to all no limit games, and the H.O.R.S.E. structure will apply specifically to the H.O.R.S.E. game this month, though a modified version will be used for all subsequent limit games.

No Limit Hold 'Em Structure (:24 minute levels):
Level 1 - 5/10
Level 2 - 10/20
Level 3 - 15/30
Level 4 - 25/50
Level 5 - 50/100
Level 6 - 75/150
Level 7 - 100/200
Level 8 - 150/300
Level 9 - 200/400
Level 10 - 300/600

Limit H.O.R.S.E. Structure (:24 minute levels; 2 games per level):
Level 1 - Ante 0; Bring In 0; Small 20; Big 40; Games H/O
Level 2 - Ante 4; Bring In 15; Small 30; Big 60; Games R/S
Level 3 - Ante 8; Bring In 20; Small 40; Big 80; Games E/H

February MPG Results

Game #1: No Limit Texas Hold 'Em:

This month's game featured a full nine-person table for the first time since October of 2007, including the entire female contigent of the membership playing in the hold 'em game for the first time this year. And while the conversation flowed from weddings to registering for weddings to dental work to whatever...

The story that emerged was the tale of Jim and his 65 chips. You see, Jim was short-stacked for most of the night, and during level four ($40/$80 blinds), Jim stuck it all-in only to lose. He didn't even have a full big blind left. But...

One quadruple-up, followed by another triple-up, followed by double-up after double-up after double-up, and Jim was sitting with the chip lead and only three players remaining. In fact, he last more than an hour and a half and battled against multiple players before coming up against...

Jason "The Sickness" Witt. The masked marauder, chip leader for most of the night's game, was also in the process of building something out of nothing when he and Jim came down to heads-up play.

"The Sickness" refused to relent and denied Jim the February '08 title of Hold 'Em champ. Jason took down his second consecutive tourney, and pushed his yearly winnings to over $100. Congrats.

The Results:
1. Jason ($30)
2. Jim ($10)
3. Chris ($5)
4. Marc
5. Sean
6. Kathryn
7. Libbi
8. Annie
9. Zach

Game #2: No Limit Five Card Draw:

Chris, along with Marc, Jim, and Jason, was banished to the kid's table during the five card draw event.

He did not let his surrounding's phase him, and ended up making the final table along with Jim, Jason, Kathryn, Libbi, and Annie.

The men could not overcome the staunch fierceness of the ladies' five card draw games. Annie and Kathryn battled in the first-ever all-female heads-up match in MPG history. Both ladies picked their spots carefully before...

Annie emerged as the victor, capturing her 2nd title of the year, and her 3rd career victory.

Annie and Kathryn were so proud of their accomplishment they decided to show off their newly built bankrolls.

The Results:
1. Annie ($30)
2. Kathryn ($10)
3. Jason
4. Jim
5. Chris
6. Libbi
7. Sean
8. Marc

MVP Voting: is now open in the comments section below. Vote for your choice of MVP in the night's game.

Updated Sidebar Categories: I've updated the sidebar categories on the side to include the "Dues Collected" for this year so all players can keep track of how much they owe for dues in the upcoming months. Also, I've put in the pot sizes for this year, and projected end-of-year pot sizes. The projected pot sizes include dues owed by all players who are still officially part of the league, regardless of attendance so far this year.

February RSVP

This photo was taken by Sean and ripped off of his website. Thanks, Sean.

Congrats to John's Poker Table on winning the January MVP! The table was magnificent, featuring a suede bumper, a padded , recessed, and felt-covered playing surface, as well as blue LED lights which were visible both on the inside and outside of the table. It suddenly made my table feel somewhat pedestrian. Nice work, John.
